3DMM.COM 2022 MOVIE OF THE WEEK MEGATHREAD
 

Hi, everyone! I was thinking recently about how many movies there are on this site that have been forgotten, or that the newer members have never even heard of. Everyone knows Sgt. Steve, 10-34, and Vlarion, but this community has been home to a TON of creativity over the years, and I wanted to come up with a way to celebrate that and introduce the newbs to some old classics.

Every Monday this year, starting from tomorrow, I will be posting a movie of the week in this thread, in the hopes of stirring up discussion. I’ve already picked all the movies, and it has a wide variety of directors, genres, and eras - it was way easier to put a list together than I expected.

The goal is to celebrate this community’s storied history, introduce newbies to older films, remind veterans of great flicks they watched in the past, and get everyone posting again!

I know for some of them it's not the "original" thread because of how everything got submitted again during the site revamp but that's what I'm choosing to call it OKAY


I picked this one as the first movie for a few reasons. Partly it's a good precursor to the contests we had throughout 2021, but it's also just a great example of the community at its peak. Looking back now, 2004 has to be the greatest single year for 3dmm, and the fact that in the middle of so many good releases filmmakers also found time to create these ridiculously cool animations shows just how active things were back then. Once you get past HMC's lazy ass not finishing you get to some incredibly sick animations, including Lizard's, which is one of my favourite things ever made with the program. It's also a good example of Beast's ultra-detailed HMCs and incredibly unique style. I was a judge in this but I skipped over those parts when rewatching so I have no idea if they're good or not (also I can't remember for the life of me who did my voice).

Those animation tournaments are always so fuckin impressive man, I strive to achieve the skill those people have and although I tend to use v3DMM I still try and try. I'm trying to make my movies closer to the level of Dooglord, who despite being younger than me, has already mastered this program enough to get his movie onto the 3DMM.com awards (without any second thought by the judge team, that's how good it is). He's a talented guy and all of the good animators here are hella talented, I'm always (at the very least) smirking when I see a subtle effect in a movie or a painstakingly created piece of scenery. 3DMM really is an interesting program, how it started as this silly piece of animation software and now, 25 years after its' release, people like Dustin Guest, Red Scorpion, Marko Polo and Holmstrom still pushed it to its' absolute limit to make beautiful pieces of art. Most of the new members here are 5-12 years younger than this program yet still pick it up and can be seen gradually improving. Even Onattienz, who has just admitted that he's 10, is still good with the program to a degree and can make some good I know parodies. Hell, he did an HMC better than I ever could. Even the community for this place, one going since 1998, is still seeing old members return to check in on how the new animators are doing. That's fucking nuts to think about.

Yeah that Tron bit was great, although Beast's part was probably my favorite. Those HMC's were crazy. Also haha I can't believe Skitch was allowed to do that bullshit 110 score for Lizard's. It would be funny if that had made the difference between first and second place (it didn't).

The entry for HMC was pretty damn good, until he ended it abruptly. I liked how everything flowed and the smoothness of the animation, but it could've had better music and more added to it. Bown sounded like a mix of Patryk Kornyatowski, Eric Cartman and a 15 year old Indian computer nerd. Skitch's score was far too low, but he was right in some regards as well. Dan's voice has been the same for the past 18 years. Lizard's entry was really good and has a great artistic style to it. I liked the conversion of film to 3dmm in the entry, and I think it was overall great. It also inspired me and I imagined different artistic styles I could make in the program after watching it. Doughboy's entry was pretty good and was fun to watch. The entry reminds me of the one Fry made for the Plopilpy murder contest, as they are both kill compilation type of movies. Those type of movies are great, however, I think movies with a continuous plot structure are generally better. Denny's movie was pretty nice and long, the music was great too. The camera had interesting angles despite having flat scenery, and the HMCs were unique and expressive. The movie had nice bits of humor sprinkled throughout the entry like the one about making a movie about Mario. The humor isn't structured, but isn't unfunny or takes away from the viewing experience. Overall, it was a great entry. Beast's movie was really really good and the animation was stellar, with HMC's that were extremely expressive, and it has incredible expression and detail. There were annoying interruptions and it was confusing with no clear plot going on, but it had overall stellar animation!


The film was awesome in general and I hope we can have contests like this in the future.

one thing is, how did they achieve 2d animation in a 3d software?

By layering textured squares on top of one another.

Even easier now after Plop figured out the MD2 flat plane stuff, super handy!

That movie was a delight to watch, I've never seen anything quite like this done in 3DMM. Thinking I might use a style in the same vain as this in a movie of my own.
