be the change you want to see in the world. Lets see your ideas.

Honestly I think the easiest thing would just be to get rid of lowercase letters all together

Happyjuice 11-14-2016 04:00 AM

O dude I think its cursive's fault actually, those descenders let u write quicker and keep the letters connected, thats totally it

Slime 11-14-2016 04:00 AM

by lined paper i mean just normal lines, like any notebook etc. i dunno i write on them constantly. but yeah, i can probably alter how i write my descenders. currently i occasionally have to skip a line because my messy handwriting makes the line underneath it bad to work with

it's worth pointing out that line paper is a pretty modern innovation

this is sanskrit, and it has little ascenders or whatever. and it kinda has its own lines, because the letters have a little horizontal line at the top.

i dont think anyone ever gave a shit about this stuff in its relation to lines for a long time

Happyjuice 11-14-2016 04:02 AM

Use blank paper instead dude. Or those japanese writing notebooks with squares.

I'm totally blaming calligraphy and mass produced manuscripts for lined paper.

Izak MD 11-14-2016 04:05 AM

this is the beowulf manuscript

pretty unsteady lines!!!!!!!

Just do how the japanese do and only have one case. JUST CHANGE EVERYTHING TO ALL CAPS, PROBLEM SOLVED. I'M CURIOUS TO SEE WHAT UR NEW LETTERS WOULD LOOK LIKE THO.

THIS THREADS P. GOOD MAN

Some of those characters TOTALLY have a "bottom part" that others don't have, but there isn't any standard line to write on.

hmm, we were taught to write all of those within the lines. maybe this is just how they teach western beginner students though (i only took 2 courses of japanese so i only learned hiragana/katakana/like 250 kanji), maybe that has nothing to do with how native speakers would write

Slime 11-14-2016 04:08 AM

wow that sanskrit looks awesome i love how it forms its own line.

i hadn't thought of lined paper being a relatively new thing

iF YOU COMPARE IT TO ANYTHING WRITTEN IN JAPANESE AROUND THE SAME TIME IT'S TOTALLY A LOT MORE UNIFORM AND EASIER TO PROCESS

NOTE: YOU READ THIS VERTICALLY NOT HORIZONTALLY.

Slime 11-14-2016 04:11 AM

all-caps handwriting looks great imo. it just slows me down to like 30% of my normal speed and i cant see it getting much faster

Slime 11-14-2016 04:11 AM

holy moly that guy has gotta learn to write! what a mess!

I'm pretty sure kids in japan learn to write in boxes and not on lines.

see, those descenders are a necessary evil.

Izak MD 11-14-2016 04:13 AM

here's hittite

ain't this some shit?

Happyjuice 11-14-2016 04:20 AM

I LIKE TO THINK ABOUT HOW THESE DIFFERENT ALPHABETS AND WRITING STYLES INFLUENCED THE CULTURES OF THE PEOPLE THAT SPEAK THEM. WHAT DO YALL THINK

ALSO, WHY IS IT HARD FOR NATIVE JAPANESE SPEAKERS TO SAY AN L SOUND. I'M GUESSING THAT SOUND DOESNT EXIST IN JAPANESE BUT WHAT DO THEY CALL LAOS

Dungeon Snake 11-14-2016 04:29 AM

probably that's why japanese have such squinty eyes, from tryin to read all them squiggly little lines all day :no

DOES THAT USE "WORDS" THE WAY YOU AND I USE WORDS?????? I'D ASSUME CHARACTERS THAT DETAILED WERE IDIOGRAMS/LOGOGRAMS, BUT SOME OF THOSE "WORDS" ARELIKE 6-7 CHARACTERS LONG WITHOUT A SPACE.

I STAND BY MY THEORY THAT EMOJIS ARE THE EARLY STAGES OF A IDEOGRAM BASED UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE

I'M SURE TENTACLE PORN HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH COMPENSATING FOR NOT HAVING ENOUGH LINES ON THE BOTTOM OF THEIR ALPHABET

hah yea the sound in its place is like a combo of L and D and R or something. i suck at it, i sound forced, so i hated speaking in front of the class... made me understand why L can give them such a problem.

this is my typical notetaking (has nothing to do with this thread but kinda funny to me)

IMAGINE WRITING JAPANESE. HOW MANY JAPANESE LETTERS CAN YOU WRITE WITHOUT HAVING TO LIFT UR PEN UP AND ADD MORE LINES TO THE SAME LETTER OR GO OVER THE SAME LINE TWICE???

Slime 11-14-2016 04:36 AM

lets all share our handwriting

yeah true, i can't judge tho because we pick up all sorts of shortcuts as we grow with our writing. like im sure i write at 1% the speed of a native

Happyjuice 11-14-2016 04:47 AM

I WAS TOTALLY GONNA DO A JOKE AND TAKE A PICTURE OF LINED PAPER LABELED "CHRIS LOHRS NOTEBOOK" WITH "IF IF IF IF IF IF IF IF" ON ONE SIDE AND "OKIE DOKE" SOMEPLACE ELSE. MAYBE THIS IS WHY I'M NOT GOOD WITH ART/MUSIC BUT I COULDN'T THINK WHAT YOU'D POSSIBLY BE WRITING ON LINED PAPER ALL THE TIME, AND THE IDEA OF BRAINSTORMING A REMIX ON LINED PAPER SEEMED SILLY

TAKE A BIGGER PICTURE I WANNA GET A BETTER LOOK. THE ONLY TIME I WRITE ON LINES IS LIKE FILLING OUT PAPERWORK AND I USE THE ________ AS THE ABSOLUTE BOTTOM AND MY LOWERCASE JS AND GS DONT TOUCH THE LINE AT ALL.

IS THE FUNKY JAPANESE ALPHABET PART OF THE REASON JAPANESE POETRY IS HAIKUS?????? HOW MUCH RHYMING CAN YOU DO IN JAPANESE. IN MOST ROMAN ALPHABET LANGUAGES YOU CAN GET A PRETTY GOOD IDEA IF WORDS RHYME OR NOT FROM THEIR SPELLING. OBVIOUSLY YOU CAN'T DO THAT WITH THOSE PICTOGRAPH/IDIOGRAPH LANGUAGES
