Hungry Pumkin Adventures

Eukos 07-12-2013 09:15 AM

Okay, I took my time to actually watch this and will give it proper feedback.

A detective movie is something we haven't had in a while here, sadly the plot of this movie is so thin and so poorly done it aches.
The animation is horrendous - default scenery is never appreciated nowadays.
You can create your own sets using props from 3dmm itself. Example is this still from Ben Rice's movie Dylan's Forgotten Fate:

The Hungry Pumpkin is not a good choice as a detective, seeing that he is vulnerable and attracts the most attention of all characters.
The music is present the most in this movie, from beginning to end we don't get too many sound effects and voices to hear in comparison to average movies, but sadly the music is just a default MIDI track mess.

What can you do better?

Think about a movie plot/story. Make something interesting.
It doesn't need to be complex, a short, brilliant idea with good animation has always invited wonderful reviews.
The best thing you can do is write the story down.
It doesn't need to be that long for starters.
Just make sure you won't create any plotholes.

Like I said, create your own scenery. Watch other peoples movies to get inspiration of how you can effectively create scenery. Examples: Redux, The Handsome Man in Australia

Second thing, start making your own characters - use original characters. You cannot simply make Superman a shop owner, or Hungry Pumpkin a Detective. 3dmm comes with generic default actors, you can also modify them using 7gen! Please do not port or steal characters since they do not encourage creativity.

Fourth thing is to keep making movies to get better! You will always find feedback here. It will be worth your while, animating in such a limited environment is a wonderful skill which will easily secure jobs in various parts in the industry if you work hard enough. :)

Fifth thing is to have fun, don't take our criticism here personal. We only want you to improve :)

Thanks for the feedback! The use of the Hungry Pumkin as a detective was a joke, and I wanted this movie to be funny rather than for it to have a good storyline, but I'll take your criticism into account and make a serious movie. I'm watching REDUX now.

ThatDude, I'd like to help out with the next movie you make, PM me!

Marko Polo 07-12-2013 11:53 AM

Eukos' criticism has to be the most constructive I've ever seen here.

New members should be made to read it word for word twice before attempting to release anything.

This would stop shit being constantly uploaded in 3dmm releases, maybe a little how-to or what to expect thread would help. Eukos, make a thread for newcomers! Hell, even a thread asking folk what they'd like to see/expect would be good, then all those opinions etc can be added to a main sticky thread for newcomers?

Eukos 07-12-2013 12:37 PM

Yeah what about writing 3dmm Manifesto Part 2 while I'm at it? I'm sure Andres would love to collaborate

Adelitas 07-12-2013 12:40 PM

I don't know if you're joking or not..

Thanks! I always love a bit of constructive criticism :annoyed .
Honestly, although I didn't want my movie to turn out as completely worthless as it apparently did, I didn't WANT it to be perfect, either. To some degree, I wanted it to be funny in the way that actors clip through walls (those parts were all mistakes but I thought they were funny so I left them in), and things like that.

The fact that there was almost 30 seconds of pumkin walking forward, the characters just standing there for a long time talking with barely any animation, the text to speech voices, the fact that you're dragging everything to move it, and the extremely slow pace made this really boring.

I can understand that. When I first joined I made a movie that was very similar to yours which I thought was hilarious but before I released it I decided to have a look at what others had made. The standard turned out to be so high that I ended up scrapping mine and starting again with a new story but really going for it. (I know I haven't released anything of substance yet but the movie I am making is now in its third incarnation after having lost it twice).

Basically what I'm saying is spend some time exploring and watching some of the movies by the pros. (Aaron Haynes, dominator dan, gorosaurus, Andres, Ben rice, etc. etc. etc.)

There are plenty of others too so ask around. That way you'll see what the standard is around here and most likely you'll get inspired to produce something of epic awesomeness.

Don't give up!

this is awesome

What's wrong with that?!? I'll admit that in some parts there were mistakes I should've fixed (like characters turning towards the camera before turning back around to walk somewhere) but I thought dragging things to move them was the whole point of 3dmm.

I'll keep the rest of your criticism in mind, though.

Phil Williamson 07-21-2013 01:14 AM

Just because it limits movement to one speed, which is often painfully slow. If you want characters/objects to move faster, just drag them into position using the hand tool each frame

Oh.
The hand tool gets really twitchy at the edges of the screen, though, and sometimes objects fly off the screen when I get too close. Is there a mod to make it less twitchy, or do I just need to improve my fine motor skills?
