Next Door
 

Next Door was released early in 2002 and is a good example of pre-texture pack animation in 3DMM at the time. While the scene compositions and general detail are outdated by today's standards, in terms of character animation, comedy and music, Next Door remains a classic to this day.

The film was nominated for 'Overall Short Movie Of The Year' in the 4th Annual 3dmm.com Awards 2002, and recieved some praise in this thread.

On a personal note, Next Door was also one of the first movies I can remember downloading and watching after stumbling onto this community almost 10 years ago. And even though the director isn't around to see it, I think this movie deserves to be archived and appreciated.

Haha the voice acting is such bad quality, but without the appeal of Will Maltby's voice acting. The story was a bit silly too, he clearly liked the Lumberjack scene a little too much. Especially making us listen to the whole thing at the end. I got confused cause at the start he seemed to have said I'M GONNA KILL EVERYONE THAT'S JUST LIKE ME, so I assumed he was gonna kill the other 3 people, but not the slam guy, but he killed them all? Like, what the hell was the point of having 4 neighbours exactly the same and then a 5th being completely different.

The bonus movie was a bit SHIT too.

It wasn't TOO bad, but ehhh.

Anyway, it was entertaining and the animation was nice.

The audio quality is terrible. There is no reason that default 3DMM sounds should be clipping so heavily. You mainly just need to lower your recording volume a bit, at least until there is no clipping.
Video quality could also be better, but whatever.

As for the movie itself... it was OK. The first ambulance was the best part. Yuri's best movie is still "The Wild Happy Fun Club" or whatever.

I actually remember watching this at some point, probably when I was going through movies that had won various awards. The animation is nice, certainly better than my own animation. And in general the style, feeling improvisationally wacky, is a really good way to start this thing off because I think that is one commonality among 3dmm movies that is not inspired by professional movies and is sort of a unique tone in 3dmm.

I didn't really laugh at all, but I'm sure I smiled a number of times. I can definitely see how, this being one of the first movies you saw when joining the community, it would be special for you. I'm not sure how it compares to other movies in 2002, but I'd give it plenty of praise if it were released today.

I thought the bonus movie was funny, as it was pretty obviously going to be shitty as we were waiting through the song. I definitely recognize the style there; that's one night with friends showing them the program. I have probably four or five of those kind of movies in various folders, so that makes me feel a bit nostalgic. In fact this whole thing makes me feel nostalgic, even though I didn't join the community until two years after it was released. I think it was a good choice.

I found the humour pretty annoying, and yeah the audio killed me, but it was an interesting watch. I had never heard of this movie before today.

Yeah, sorry to everyone about the audio. I didn't realise it was quite so bad until now and I'll try and fix that for next time.

I know this movie is far from being up to scratch with alot of other movies that were released in 2002 (eg. Ninja Gaiden, Doom 2, Johnny Samsonite), but I was trying to find something that wasn't already in the movie archive and that alot of people wouldn't have seen or even heard of. I think considering that, makes this movie more enjoyable to watch. I don't know maybe I'm just being nostalgic. Anyway, it's good to see people's reactions and I'm looking forward to next week's movie.

Also thanks to the mod who changed the title and director in the showcase, it's alot clearer now. :)

oh and Dan etc. it's hard to tell in the youtube, but after he says "gonna kill those other guys who are just like me," before his next laugh, he adds, "oh and that annoying bloke, too." So yeah he was going to kill Slam either way.

This was OK. Everything was custom, so that's good. The entire Lumberjack song at the end was unnecessary, though dynamic enough to keep me interested, as opposed to having one guy standing there doing Dance until the end. The rocket explosion was nice and I "almost laughing" smiled at the ambulance bits.

Worth the few minutes of my life but would not feel compelled to watch again.

Edot: And yeah, the bonus movie was pretty awful.

This doesn't feel like a 2002 movie. It feels much older, but when you realize that there was no expansion pack to work with, or anything crafted by Travis Wells or Aaron Haynes it makes the movie that much more impressive. All of the details from the contents of the ashtray to the desk lamp, to the mirror are all rather impressive, as well as the movement of the scenery.

The plot is in no way spectacular. There is no hidden meaning to it. You're not supposed to read into this as one man breaking out of conformity. It's just a fun movie. And if you're a fan of the lumberjack song it's perfect for you.

I kinda liked it, I was surprised. The deaths were quick and funny, and the reprise of the lumberjack song with all the new neighbors felt weirdly appropriate. The movie's using it as a crutch, but it pays off alright. At least until Yuri let it just keep going until it ended. The bonus movie was really dumb. If it had ended midway through the song, it would've been nice and quick and entertaining, but making us wait around for another few minutes kind of soured it.

The voice of the main guy was hard to understand even in the vimeo version, I only picked up on his motivation after going back and listening a second time. But the intro, where it kept cutting to identical Augustins, made me laugh. Nothing special, but not bad.

This is a fairly decent little number, kind of reminiscent of the goofy deaths of the I Know saga, with the vaguest of vague attempts to include some kind of a motive, indistinct as it is both in terms of narrative and fuzzy recordings. The deaths aren't the most innovative, but they're not trying to be. It seems to be going for something more calm and laid back than the typical Maltby PAM, even though the voice acting has to go and ruin that. The scenery's pretty good for the time, and the Lumberjack song, while a strange choice for any movie under any context, actually gives the film a nicely quirky atmosphere, and pays off quite well at the end.

The closing short on the other hand.....yeah......what? Lost me there.

Hey dudes. Sorry for the thread bump, but as the director of this movie (Yuri) I just wanted to express some appreciation that it was dug up and discussed 9 years after I made it!

I always found it odd that this movie was well-received when it came out, because I never really liked it (I actually agree with Phil's review - it wasn't very funny and other similar movies at the time had better animation/content). It was just my attempt to try and make a movie with more complex animation than I usually attempted - just to see if I could do it.

My favourite movie of mine is still The Wild Happy Club (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQmDdiyZQ7o). That's the kind of thing I preferred making - anything with non-sensical humour and intentionally shameful animation. Funnily enough, the only part of Next Door I enjoy watching is the bonus movie (which clearly everybody hated - haha). It's just so fucking stupid!
