What 3dmm directors are you inspired by? And who have you 'stolen' techniques from?
I would nearly say Griff is my favourite director. I've tried to copy some of his style a few times. What I like most is the way he uses the explosion prop.
Also, the intro scene to his movie 'ATUA' is my favourite 3dmm scene. Redwampa's stuff just makes ya go "Faaark... how does he animate those characters like that?!?!?" Adrian's work is just magic, and seems to change everytime you see something new of his. I like some of Andres' style, though he tends to be too fast. I've used the explosion style out of 'Rednecks in newyork' by Blake walker, I still base a lot of my explosions on the ones in that movie. I'll probably copy frogman's explosions now. Nick the Almighty is just the king of wrestling 3dmm stuff, so of course I copy heaps of what he does. Jimmy Pozin is amazing, but somehow sloppy... he makes everything crap blend together and move everywhere to make it look fantastic. JR Dizon, I've coped something off him. Those little anime type flash things when ya animate fighting. But yeah, overall I'd say I like Griff the best. Even if I like other movies better, I like Griff's style and his inovation. My movie I'm working on, my big movie, Froggy man, I'm trying to fill it with new stuff aswell that hasn't been done. I've got about 3 new effects so far, so maybe I'll be copied off one day... |
Ben Williams and Blake Walker
|
I copy Jackson buhcks Explosions, hmm lets see I have my own animations, uhhh I make up alot of effects like flashes and stuff.
Mostly I try too copy NTA and Dustin Guest on scenery. A little bit of pozin. |
REdwampa didn't want me to reveal this, but i have to
Redwampa learnt every damn thing he knows in 3dmm from me! I taught him everything!! me animating awfully in 3dmm is just an act. cuz if i do my real animating, it'll be soooooooo amazing that the whole community will realize they can't beat my style and quit their day jobs. |
hmmmmmmm
i keep it plain with scenery but i try and copy NTA's gun styles with a bit of Andres-style fast camera movements |
I love Maltby's erratic character movements and camera panning.
But I'll definite say Redwampa also when it comes to prop characters and scenery. |
Pikios your nose out of redwampas ass!
|
And put it in EVAN'S!
Nah serious, Pikios has a point. What bout you, Ev? I kinda think of your directing as similar to Spencer's. |
I can direct like anyone it's pretty easy like when I am doing a movie with spencer i do his style so it blends.
|
BUT YOU KNOW WHAT CUNT! I AM SPENCER CRABB!

Well, now we're expecting absolutely magical direction and perfect animation with Shit Happens... :) |
I mainly imitate...
Maltby/Guy Collins (ITB) scenes... Pikios and Pozin special effects... Maltby animation and guns... and Mike Belfance homemade characters... :) |
sigh, i'll never be a big 3dmmer so people will say "yea, Ban is my favorite director"
fuck |
Maybe... Pozin.
|
Oh yeah, guns. The first guns I copied were Qutput's, out of 'Stealth assassin'.
|
I make my scenery in the style of Will Maltby
but my animation is more like Dustin Guests my new movie is a mix of those my guns are my brothers own amazing style, and my camera work is mostly taken from real films i like |
Whilst making TH2 I stole the gun technique from DD, before that I was using cylinders. Also the "slowmo" matrix thingy and errr... that’s all I can think of......at the moment.
As far as inspiring me movies like Sgt. Steve, Bodily Functions, Baked Goods 3, Apology, and Search for Stanley if anything "inspires" me to continue working with 3dmm. There's just some unique wholesome quality about them all that keeps pulling me back to 3dmm, course there are others but those stick out the most in my mind. I suppose most of the films I’ve listed in the awards section of review central would count in that category as well, "most" I said, there are a few exceptions. =P Edit: And Jeff speaks the whole truth an stuff. |
ADAM SHAW.
Best director ever. Shame he released only about 3 things. |
Steve Astill, actually.
|
I kinda have my own style.....
SHIT. |
Haha, yes you do, James.
|
Fredrick is the one who got me going. I was at explode productions and saw his movie x treme. I asked around until I found this cd and I hope I can get a movie out real soon. I'm working on redwampa's Rat'Epol series. He never finished it and it is a good story. So I am not going to let that go to waste. Also I am making a music video for the contest.
|
Lol, you kidding me? Xtreme? That was my first movie, and its shit! I..I suck.
|
no that was the first movie I ever saw so It made me want to make an action movie like that. Then I downloaded the rest of your movies.
|
My favorite directors I might say are brad ross and nick the almighty. Nick the almighty's wrestling series wrestlemania, made me very angry that my techniques back when I was just starting out in the community. So,when I was making community deathmatch (ARGH, WHY DID I JUST MENTION THAT NAME?) I started copying some of his animation and scenes from them. I'm extremley sorry about that and to all the directors I offended when I made that, So I decided not to copy scenes and animation from other films I have not made after I made that horrible waste of time (Like I said, I was just starting out in the community.)

It's been a while since I made movies, but what're you talking about? Gimme an example, please. And I've copied Maltby's "fast walking" and "asterik" blood... |
redwampa: nuts 1 inspired me to make my first custom scene
ben whele: scnes, animation, a bunch of other shit tuna: some scene shit winfeild: music shortening( im still working on that) asterik blood maltby: shit!!! smokin' barrels in its entirety is based off DD haynes: hell of alot of shit strnad: some scene making id say macgowan inspires me alot with his short but educational (gimme a better word than "educational") films (just one story, man of my dreams, etc) |
Excellent question.
I generally don't base my style on other 3dmmer's style. I base it on the style of real movies. However, I was a big fan of Maltby's OLDER style (before AACW), and I made a bunch of short movies just for training, copying that style (that's why my stuff is fast). I also try to emulate Jimmy Pozin's constant use of camera. The only thing I've truly based myself on is with my recent movie, "The Warrior" (not released yet). I'm basing the animation and camera angles on Jason Ruiz's unfinished "Jackson" (a freaking BRILLIANT film directing-wise). As for my real movies, I rip off from: - Tim Burton - Alex Proyas - Steven Spielberg - Robert Rodriguez And I'm currently ripping off Alfred Hitchcock, David Fincher, and Wes Anderson. |
Private Jimmah, I still love watching all your old shit. It's just so fucking good! I tried to copy a few little bits and that was fun. I have also watched "The Fight" alot as guy's style and skill is amazing! Brad has a really cool style too that I like to copy every now and again.

Hah ! ta matey !

SOMEONE SAID MY NAME! OOOO *cries* not really .

RIP
I do whatever I feel would be cool.
I don't really copy the style of movies from anyone, i make my own. I watch movies alot, and you get a feel for movies and cameras and such, as I'm sure you all do. I just do whatever I think would make an intersting scene. Usually, though, it's fucking hard, lol. But who inspires me? Tony Teulan, Stannly Pennent and Curtis Liddicoat. I like how tony does not only 3dmm, but real movies. Stannly is just a cool bloke, and a damn good critic. Curtis - never met him - but a good director. Damn good. |
Stealing techniques from... that's a hard question to answer, I basically steal anything that makes me go, "Hey, that was pretty cool" and try to duplicate it.
so, if you've made a good movie, I've probably stolen something from it. In the bigger picture of scene making... I guess I've developed my own style of scenery. |
Guy Collins, and Jim Weatherby.
|
I SUCK at scenery. I hate it, it's terrible shit. Scenery to me is a few moving blocks that can make awesome camera moves. I'd rather a plane looking scene that pans and spins around then an ultra detailed scene that slowly moves across the screen, sometimes filled with TOO much detail making the movie slow right down.
The thing I'm trying to do in Froggy man is get that "Wow! That was cool!" factor, using unseen stuff, or improving a lot on old techniques. I think nearly everyone does the 'Maltby' walking now, the fast thing. But honestly, I did that before I saw Maltby's movies, it has just always looked better. And Red... inspired by Baked Goods 3?!?!?!?!?? |
I like making detailed scenery. But you're right, Brad.

Wait a damn sec, what the hell is "Maltby Walking"? If it's animating the character walking in place and then moving him frame by frame, Maltby didn't invent that. Someone did a long time ago. Probably Ruiz or someone
|
Godamn I like chinese food!
It's Maltby's trademark to do the fast character movements, he always has, even in earlier movies. People just asociate the quick character movements with Will.
As far as newbies go, I'd say Will's style has the most impact. The most unoriginal director I've seen is Jordi Visser. It's Maltby all over. I know what ya gettin at Dustin, but people will instantly know what I'm talking about if I refer to it as 'Maltby' walking. And if you all like, change 'Stolen' to 'Copied', the same thing but nicer sounding. |

|
Brad, you liked my scenery (WIH)?
|
Also Freds scenes and Jay's(Qutput) animation. I've taken alot of freds scenes apart to see how he made them and they are just great. It's the same with Jay's animation i've taken it a part and looked how he has made every thing and it's just amazing.
|
Will Maltby has inspired me alot, I don't nick his style that much though.
But we all have our own styles. You can never be exactly like another persons style, unless u nick the scenes from there movies or ask them to make 'em for ya. I have my own style, it's not very good at the moment, but its not bad, and is improving rapidly. |
Blake Walker and Adam Shaw. They is all misser...
|
Craig Dewey and Pozin.

That's because I had a part in it, remember? |
Not that I've made a real movie or anything, but whenever I watch Nathan Urquarts movies I feel totally motivated to make a movie. I'll sometimes start one ... but never actually get around to making the content.
The Search for Stanley was so basic in plot yet so ORIGINAL and AWESOME at the same time. And it wasn't overly hilarious or anything, but the comedy was really well written and had an awesome twist at the end. And Executions and Suicides were both hilarious as well. The idea's he had were so fucking grouse! And the way he animated them - which was in no way spectacular - was totally perfect. |
