Top 5 favorite albums of 2004?

Yup, I'm gonna have my go at this. Make your own lists, and comment on mine. (though most people will flame my list.) Oh and at the very bottom I have my favorite song of the year.

5. The Used - "In Love and Death"

It was tough deciding whether to put this as number 5, or Midtown's excellent cd "Forget what you know", but ultimately I liked more songs in this cd. Yes, it's not as good their debut cd, but it's still damn good!

The songs at the two extremes were still excellent! The heavy songs on this cd are fantastic, especially "let it bleed", while the very slow songs like "Yesterday's feelings" and "it's hard to say" are instant sing-along classics!

4. Jimmy Eat World - "Futures"

Seeing that I wasn't a fan of JEW before this cd, I didn't expect much when I downloaded this. God damn this is cd surprised the hell out of me! It's a very nice mellow cd with great songs like "Pain" with great driving guitar work, but the true greatness of the cd lies in songs like "23" and "Kill"...the melodies are just absolutely beautiful in this cd.

3. Greenday - "American Idiot"

What's there to say that hasn't been said? I love the idea of the songs one after another creating a storyline, and the two 9 minute songs are fuckin excellent! Besides those, Greenday still delivers other great songs such as "Holiday"...the part where it's like, "The representative from California has the floor"...for some reason that part gave me goosebumps first time I heard that.

So many excellent catchy songs on this, "Novocaine" and "When September ends" are instant sing along classics, while songs like "St. Jimmy" and "She's a rebel" are damn catchy punk-pop songs.

2. Strung Out - "Exile in Oblivion"

Strung out continue to prove why they are such a god damn amazing skate punk band. These guys are so ridiculously talented, and it's annoying how many people say, "Strung out sux!" I say to those people, "STFU!!"

Now a friend of mine who's a drummer who idolized Jordon the drummer critisized Jordon for using double bass pedal in this album, seeing that Jordon has said in past interviews that the double bass pedal is a "cheat pedal".

It didn't bother me. The double bass pedal wasn't over-used, and when it occasionally was used it worked absolutley beautifully!

Jordon continues to do amazing work with the drums. While the cd does have its fair share of mediocre songs, the good songs are god damn excellent!

Track #1 to #4 are all fast, furious, and heavy punk tunes which are damn excellent, and go very quickly from being poppy melodies to hearing Jason Cruz's screams, which sound pretty damn good. The second half of the cd which is far poppier doesn't quite match up to the first half of the cd, but still has some damn catchy melodies, and still very fine guitar work (Despite some T-bar use in the last two songs).

Strung out continue to prove they're god damn amazing musicians. (Though this album still doesn't match up to their past efforts: Twisted by design and Teenage Wastland Suburban blues)

finally.

1. My Chemical Romance - "3 cheers for Sweet Revenge"

I had no expectations going into this cd, I just downloaded it cuz someone at the simple plan board told me to. Maybe I'm not just listening to the right stuff, but the music just sounded so different and so original to me. "You know what they do to guys like us in prison"...I've never heard a song like that before, but it's god damn brilliant! When I heard this cd I didn't know which other band to compare them to. Everything about the songs are brilliant! The singer rulz, the metallic riffs are very nicely contrasted with catchy melodies...this was an easy pick for best cd of the year. Just about almost every song on this cd is completley mix cd worthy.

Favorite song of the year

This one has to go to Strung Out off their "exile in Oblivion" cd. This song is called "never Speak again"

It's one of the poppier songs off the cd, but the drumming is fantastic, and the song roughly around the 80 second mark to 2 min mark is easily the best part of the song. Beautiful part and the double bass pedal works beautfifully as well.

Honorable mentions of cd's that didn't make the list:

Midtown - "Forget what you know"
Sum 41 - "Chuck"
Sugarcult - "Palm Trees and Power Lines"
Get Up Kids - "The Guilt show" (Don't remember if this was this year, but whatever)

Pizza The Hut 12-22-2004 05:26 AM

oh god, shield yourself Jeff!

The Chinese Jew 12-22-2004 05:27 AM

meh, it's been a while since I took a flaming for my musical taste.

Pizza The Hut 12-22-2004 05:29 AM

True, wasn't the last time when you told of new Sum 41 or somethin?

Anyway, I personally don't really know too many albums that came out this year, so I couldn't make a list. I really just discovered tons of albums/bands that were new to ME, but not new as of this year.

Steve Adair 12-22-2004 06:30 AM

Actually all of Jeff's albums he posted are decent. I like MCR, Green Day, and The Used. Haven't heard but one song of Jimmy Eat World's new CD so I can't really judge and never heard of Strung Out.

I just got the Against Me CD today. Check it, foo.

Bobby Swisha 12-22-2004 06:31 AM

Fuck My Chemical Romance. They're like, shitty AFI posers.

Dave Miles 12-22-2004 06:32 AM

The only album I actually got this year was Sam Roberts, but I really liked it a lot. I think my music taste is too picky.

Andres 12-22-2004 06:34 AM

Try that song I posted in my original post. It's a Strung Out song. Not their best song...it's my favorite off that album, but they've made better stuff....but still a god damn excellent song!

The drummer of Strung out is god damn amazing!

Steve Adair 12-22-2004 07:11 AM

Not bad. Heard any Against Me?
