Proposition 8 supposedly passed
 

So there is something that I haven't really talked about much on this board. It is probably because the last year or two I have even posted that much, I've been busy and even if I haven't been posting, I've been keeping up to date. I still really enjoy reading this forum.

As the title states, Proposition 8 to ban gay marriage seems to have passed in California today. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am. Although I cannot tell you how happy I am about Obama winning.

On June 16th, 2008 same-sex marriage was made legal in California. Which was also a very special day for me, I (living in Canada) got married as well. It was completely a coincidence that my husband and I ended up getting married on that day, we had been planning on doing it for months, whenever we got the spare money together...and that was the day. So I went to City Hall and along with some close friends, we got married. (I posted a few pictures in a thread a few months ago, but I think most people viewed it as a joke or something.)

It seems by the projections right now that Proposition 8 was passed. I am so saddened by this. There are many reason because of this. For one, I think that denying a group of people a civil right they so want and deserve is cruel enough, but when you continue to give them this right, then take it away is downright cruel.

After I my excitement about Obama winning had calmed down a bit, I began looking to see if Prop 8 had passed or not. Again...it's not a sure thing...but seems like it was passed. My first thought after reading about this was "what's going to happen to all the people who got married during this time?"

It seems that it's not set in stone yet what happens. Since it was basically worded as saying "Marriage is between a man and a woman" it would seem they want to get rid of those marriages that have already taken place. I think that is completely offensive if that happens. I am not sure if that's what will happen, I believe the courts will decide that after they know the results.

I can't even explain how after getting married, then having it taken away how I'd feel. It wouldn't be good as you can assume.

Obama is all for civil unions that are completely the same as marriages, but that brings up "Separate but Equal" which I don't like very much either. Ellen said that's like saying "You can sit over here...but not over there" and I don't like the fact that someone could say that.

So yeah...I dunno it's really early in the morning and I'm tired, but I just wanted to rant a little about this.

Agreed, it's one of the things about Obama that I really dislike. I don't think it's political expediency either -- he genuinely doesn't believe the US should have gay marriage.

But he did denounce Prop 8 as setting a bad precedent for the US. No matter how you feel about gay marriage, it takes some balls to vote for a proposition that will literally annul the marriages of thousands. It takes rights away from American citizens. You're voting to do that if you vote for Prop 8.

Yeah, that sucks man. I voted no. There were so many anti 8 ads I'm actually really suprised California passed it.

anyway I wouldn't worry about it just yet. It's only down 52-48 with only 62% of precincts reporting, with some liberal areas like Los Angeles County not yet having returned nearly all their results. CNN at least hasn't called it, and I certainly wouldn't say it's a sure thing. If it does pass though, well, yeah, a darn shame.

Yeah I think I read somewhere that it is somewhere around 11,000 same-sex couples.

I saw Obama talk about it and he said he is very sympathetic since not that long ago his mother and father wouldn't have been allowed to get married...But I still wish he viewed things differently.

I don't think it would be right for religions against gay marriage to be forced to marry same-sex couples...but I went to city hall.

I think this also pisses me off so much since I was married the same day as a bunch of these people, so I could've very well been one of the people who are now facing their marriages to be annuled.

haha I'm still attracted to women as well. I just like men more and I find I connect much better. But yeah I look at it as marrying a man makes me gay since I'm not going to be sleeping with anymore women. I've never been happier then where I am right now in my life.

I honestly don't look at porn THAT much anymore...but if I do, I think its more so gay now...

Serious. The way Warren's phrased it sounds like he's going to loose his feelings. So I"m asking what's the difference between married and not married? What do you loose?

Exact same thing as what I'd lose if my marriage to my wife was denied.

On another note, wow, this site has representation from all walks of life. We can now add A same sex husband to the list.

If I was in Warren's position, having not long married someone and then having it 'legally' annulled, my attitudie would be:
"I've already married you, I still love you, and so long as you're wearing that ring I'm still going to refer to you as my wife/husband."

Hey there, tax paying citizen. You are less equal than other tax-paying citizens, so for purely moral / religious reasons we're going to classify your legal union as less than other, heterosexual legal unions.

You don't understand how that could affect you? It's not that the love he feels for his partner will change, it's just a blow to be considered less-than by society and the supposedly non faith based legal system.

I don't understand, hence why I'm asking. What are the effects?

Cause I see your wedding photos and you've got all your buddies with you, and no one here gives a shit if you're gay either.
So to me that says you've got good people in your life who're there for you no matter what, so if there's someome who has a problem with how you opperate, is anything they say really important when everyone else thinks you're groovy?
