Memories of a Lost Friend

3 Attachment(s)
This movie pretty much shows how my best friend was killed. This is not extremely gory! Note: This is my first finished movie and is made of entirely custom scenery.

Straight from Youtube for the lazy!

Please ignore the "Made for film fest" thing in credits.
It was originally planned for film fest release but I decided to release it early.

Also, there is a link to the wmv below.

Pretty good movie for a noob, some of the descriptions and stuff you said in your narration were really lame, I'm sure you were doing that on purpose, but still...

Bown 08-24-2008 09:33 PM

Why didn't you just wait until the FF? Kind of a dick move considering it's struggling for films atm

Well, releasing this early makes me want to make another film by the film fest. I almost for sure will. And I wanted to find out what is good and bad about this so my next movie can be even better!

You forget the enthusiasm + free time 15-year-olds have. He'll make another one.

Pizza The Hut 08-25-2008 03:24 AM

Oh, lol, it said he made it for the fest in the credits. You are aware that anything released before a fest can't be a part of it? It's gotta be all brand new stuff.

Anyway, I loved the narrative style! I can't give it that high of a score though, because you REALLY need to work on your voices. The entire movie was voice-centered (I'm not even gonna critique the 3dmming because it wasn't the main focus, clearly), so the voices need to be very, very good. You would pause, stutter occasionally. Like one I can remember, "she went to get some....milk." Just do retakes until it's perfect.

Also, the mic was really high quality but just as a tiny nitpick there were still quite a bit of harsh "punch" sounds from the harder consonants...maybe you were too close to the mic?

Anyway, I enjoyed. The voices def. need improvement, not only the things I just mentioned but also the acting could get better. I know you're 15, but don't let any excuse such as that get in your way. Practice a lot until you know you're improving. Make sure those voices are quality.

Yes I am aware this can't go in the fest. In the first part I said ignore that but whatever. Anyway thanks for the comments. The random "punch" sounds are most likely the result of me turning mic volume up. And yeah I do studder in this a little. This movie had some major script changes that were made up while recording because the narration had to be cut quite a bit and there are parts where certain elements are taken out. Anyway thanks for the comments!

I don't mind seeing a proper movie release now, seeing as we've barely had any the past three months. Besides, as he said, he might finish another one for the festival. Anyway, I'll watch this tonight!

lol, apparently I'M the one who's not fully attentive here.

Tuna Hematoma 08-25-2008 11:34 PM

I pretty much agree with Pizza and Compcat. Seems like you made this as a short story for school and tried it in 3dmm or something.

Lol. Bown thinks it's about a dead friend...

Anthropophagus 08-29-2008 02:44 AM

The voiceovers are fucking horrendous. Such unnecessarily long and unwieldy descriptions of EVERYTHING; it's forced and sounds like the audio equivalent of swallowing glass. Also, I was fucking mad when I found out that the lost friend was a container of chocolate chips and I wasted minutes of morbid curiosity for a death that never came.

Bown 08-29-2008 06:36 AM

hahaha what? in that case i'm not watching this

Fredrick 08-31-2008 09:36 AM

That was... cute in a way, but not particularly interesting. Would probably have worked better if it was a bit shorter. An OK first movie though.

Eric Burger 09-04-2008 06:58 PM

It was okay.

I can't say I really understood what you were going for. Why did you treat a container of chocolate chips as a person? Why was there a funeral? I didn't get your concept. And I wasn't sure if the lame, overly complex descriptions were meant to be tongue-in-cheek, or if the writing was just not very good.

The narration sounded like someone reading a book report to a class. Very rushed and unsure without much emotion. And some parts were louder than others. You probably should have split the script up, and did multiple takes of each section until you got it right.

Some of the animation was... strange. The tree's shadows were a bunch of cylinders and were thinner than the tree. The splashes from the puddle hovered in the air instead of disappearing.

Also, the chip container kind of floated in the air. I suggest studying animation in other 3DMM movies, for example from Aaron Haynes, Gorosaurus, and Michael Sanford. Just to get a feel for how to make objects move convincingly.

Pretty good for a first attempt, though. You just need some practice. I think you'll get better if you keep at it.

Jaret 09-04-2008 09:16 PM

Okay, just to clear things up, I live in a small boring town where, one day, we decided that Stacha was going to be our best friend. We treated it like a real person... Anyway, the long descriptions were to help you know how bored we were in the real world. I guess I should have shortened it... Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

Apfigur 09-09-2008 12:27 PM

I didn't really like the narrative here. I mean, it's like you're trying to package your film with some sort of unnecessary narration, when inside it, it's nothing.

Whatever. Make more movies.

his dead friends a cookie box

Bown 12-19-2009 07:50 PM

I never did watch this

Mabdog 12-19-2009 08:48 PM

I liked it.. but stopped paying attention halfway through and when I saw the thing drop I thought it was ashes or something.. and although the funeral was a bit strange if this was what it had been.. I got a bit sad.
