Whodunnit

Around about the same time I got a hold of 3DMM, I also came across an old Macintosh murder mystery game. It was kinda meh, but a part of it that stood out for me was a level where you have to zoom in on parts of a photograph (Pretty much like that one scene in Blade Runner) to put together evidence. At some point or other I must have just thought "Hey I could do something like this in 3DMM". Not quite sure HOW I came to that conclusion, but hey I did. Within the course of the next day or two, I put together a little story of six 3dmm characters. One dead, five suspects, one of whom is guilty.
For those who never played this first time around, the original instructions are included, and are probably self explanitory. Clicking on stuff with the costume changer will bring up descriptions about said stuff. While the actual puzzle itself is rather easy, there's plenty of subplots and easter eggs to keep you amused. When first posted, Whodunnit inspired quite a response, inspiring a number of fan Whodunnits. It also has the dubious honor of inspiring Andrew James Thomas' breakthrough release, Who Dunnit Replay. Oh and for those interested... The Solution (copypasta from the original thread) Willy, fed up trying to slim down the fatass bongo, decided to do away with him. He developed a deadly poison and added it to the mushrooms in the dining room. Bongo was the only one to eat the mushrooms and so was the only one to be poisoned. He suddenly started to feel unwell and staggered out of the room, knocking over a bottle of ketchup on the way. He then had a lie down on the sofa where the poison completed its course and killed him. Gregory, who wanted bongo dead himself, then saw this as an opportunity to break into Bongo's secret vase stash, but was caught by Gustave who shot him, and hid him up the chimney Originally posted on April 21 2003 by Max McIlmunn (who now feels really old) Originally solved 25 minutes later by Gavin Owers (It was kinda easy) |
i was shit at all of these :(
|
What's the deal with Patrick screaming in Willy's lab?
|
I can't actually remember! I guess I should have kept crib notes.
|
We should do more of these!
|
I made one once!
I think it was solved even quicker than this one :( But people seemed to like it! |
yeah, there shoudl be more stuff like this.
there should be more "non-movie" 3dmm stuff to be quite honest. LET'S FUCKIN' DO IT, GUYS. |
It'd probably be pretty easy to do a Choose-Your-Adventure plot with single-frame storybook images. Just put them on frame 2 with an empty frame 1 to keep people from accidentally jumping to the wrong part of the story. You could even hide Whodunnit-style clues inside on-screen objects that people could hunt for.

That is an awesome idea.
|
This was amazing, I hope there'll be more someday.

I was thinking about this last night and a cool thing could be to have the "base" game aka the movie you download but there's additional rooms/stuff/etc that you can only access by downloading another file, and the address can only be found through either searching in the base game, or hints about the address. |
Damn, that's a good idea. I've been trying to figure out an efficient way of doing inventory, but it seems like it'd mean duplicates of a lot of scenes up to the point where an object is usable.
I might do a short one of these just to test it out. |
I've been wanting to do a choose-your-own-adventure movie for a long time, but hasn't that already been done? Where like you watch a scene, and at the end of the scene it stops playback and asks you what to do next, and you fastforward to a particular scene... that's been done, right? Cause if not I've got to DO IT
|
I remember that one. Quite innovative but I didn't like it.
|
I made one, and I stole the idea from Denny Betterman anyway. I wouldn't let originality hold you back.

oh my crap! I did this big RPG in 3dmm a looong time ago which played like a cross between a choose your own adventure book and final fantasy, with cutscenes that stopped and gave options oh man i wish i could find that..
|
Choose-your-own adventure stuff should be done on youtube with that new interactive feature.
|
The problem is you'd need to do a new youtube video for each branching path. You'd probably have to create an account specifically for it.
It'd be much easier to link together in Flash. |
no, u-tube
|
that was pretty good
u say someone figured it out? I didn't get it at all, so I read the spoiler :) i guess it makes sence. keep up the good work |
these are fucking awesome, even though i suck at them.
we need to make more of these, it's a very clever idea. |
whodunnit is a great idea!
|
Crap!! I can't do any of the 5 whodunnits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CRUEL WORLD!
|
Actually this might actually be pretty fun, if I had the time to make one.
