I AM GOING TO WATCH AND REVIEW THIS DURING THE WEEKEND.

Richard Bevis 04-03-2008 04:54 PM

Oh no, I think it was Compcat who hated The Pool :(.

Molotov 04-03-2008 05:18 PM

Haha, okay, I'm gonna start off here by saying you have gotta cut down on that 'wacky' voice stuff you seem to do at random intervals, cause it kinda comes off as a lazy way of invigorating the speech a little and can get REAL annoying. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if you didn't start off with that shiz with that completely pointless pseudo-funny nonsense sequence at the beginning. In fact, there's several similar sequences that could easily be cut from this (The singing zombies, for one. I dunno, I just didn't like it). Skits in a show like this are no bad thing, as long as they're done well, eh?

That said, there's some real, real good potential here. Your sets are consistently awesome and have a good style to em that I really like, as well as your surprisingly effective character model. (I'm also shocked to find that the sets are made from various individual models instead of one large model, which seemed very impressive) The reviews were alright for what they were, but I guess the real highlight here magazine-show wise was the interviews, which were actually quite interesting and fairly enjoyable. Therefore I encourage you to continue this series, if only to evolve it a little from the first attempt, and I'll gladly watch the second installment.

P.S: I laughed at that fat guy with the nazi flag.

Yeah... sorry. And I hated it a lot when I made the review too. Although I still feel that it was probably a bit unfair, there was just something about it I did not like at all.

Richard Bevis 04-03-2008 05:26 PM

Haha, Michael Sandford sounds like Claire from Lost. Okay, my movie review aside that was slightly disappointing. The erratic voice thing that you upheld was fairly tedious. And what was the deal with the little movie at the start? I dunno, it didn't seem to have the structured chat show feel that I was hoping for and it ended up feeling like something Ben Rice might have made. Looked pretty good in certain places though.

Trooper 04-03-2008 05:59 PM

What happened to SPOILER tags guys? Now I know half of the goings-on.

Anyway, I'll download and comment, Compcat.

Dominator Dan 04-03-2008 06:26 PM

Yeah, the wacky voices were fun when you were doing reviews and were like RIGHT AWWDIOOOOO, but yeah the zombies and the other stuff was just kinda ehhhHHHh.

I laughed at theway michael leaves the studio, you should of done something completely different with fred, like, maybe get stuck in the pipe, and then in the next episode have the next director fall out and push him out aswell, YEAH I DUNNO

this has potential, since MY INTERVIEW IN SANDFORD'S CRAP ASS 'ZINE was cancelled i'm up for whoring out some EXCLUSIVE INFO should you do another episode (youshould)

edit: awesome idea with the 3dmm map scenes haha, really clever, and WHOA 666 FRAMES IN ONE SCENE

Michael Sandford 04-04-2008 01:49 AM

ahahah, that was cool.
The first movie was weird and felt like a Domke parody or something.
so yeah, I ended skipping the last few scenes of that
But the rest was really good, scenery was cool and ... dungeon-y. The reviews were cool but the omega project ended up way out of sync. Although you warned that might happen so yeah theres no reason for me to tell you.
I'd be really interested knowing how long it took you to make that old 2005 movie because you could tell how fast you were improving with 3dmm while making IT WAS FUN TO SEE THAT.
and WOO I know what Fredrick Arnoy sounds like while not being 13 and saying "bang you with my gun"
how long untill the next episode?

Compcat 04-04-2008 01:53 AM

I was actually thinking of working on a more serious movie for a while, and then coming back to this when I get too bored/frustrated. But I have a feeling I will make bits and pieces here and there, so I have no idea...

HMC 04-04-2008 07:25 PM

Your voice acting needs some work. Put a little more enthusiasm into it instead of just droning on like you don't care at all and making weird-ass noises for no reason. Also, the skits were pretty awful for the most part. Like, there weren't any real jokes, it seemed like. What was the point in the zombie singing other than to annoy the audience? You're supposed to be trying to appease the audience. That's the entire basis of the term 'entertainment'.

Dominator Dan 04-04-2008 08:15 PM

Haha if i was better at writing responses, that would probably be it right there.

Nokes 04-04-2008 08:53 PM

ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Actually that was one of the reasons for the noises, or maybe the only reason. I hate the sound of my voice, and it is really monotone, so sometimes I'd do the strange noises on purpose to try to make the voices more... entertaining, but sometimes it was just out of frustration at recording them a million times trying to get them to sound bearable. Now I know that the wacky random noises is not entertaining, so I'll be sure not to continue them.

Raz 04-04-2008 11:29 PM

youtube this and i'll give you a good critical response.

Dominator Dan 04-04-2008 11:36 PM

youtube a 20+ minute movie? ARE YOU INSANE

Compcat 04-05-2008 12:35 AM

You know I was honestly thinking about it, and I definitely want to now, but I don't think my sound card will record audio from speakers, I can't get that to work at all. Also me having vista means that it will mess up the small midi part in the movie.

Space Goat 04-05-2008 06:06 PM

Overall, nice job. The "weird-ass" noises as others had mentioned were not as annoying as I was expecting. You certainly could be a bit more enthusiastic in your voice acting though. It sounded very unnatural in several places, and I could tell you were reading many of your lines as you spoke.

I thought the set design was absolutely amazing, with great attention to detail. It was obvious to me that a lot of work went into building that, and it really pays off, especially when your comedy bits (such as the singing zombies) completely fail. At least I was able to enjoy the custom scenery while my ears bled.

Props to Michael and Fred for having some interesting things to say. I had a hard time hearing Fred though. You should have adjusted the volume on his files before releasing this.

Michael's "exit" was very funny, but I only laughed the first time. I would encourage "variations on a theme" for this now reoccurring gag.

I enjoyed this and hope you release more episodes.

Space Goat 04-05-2008 07:21 PM

Added download mirror.

Compcat 04-05-2008 07:26 PM

Thanks. And thanks to pirate balloon too.

Fredrick 04-06-2008 10:14 AM

Okay, I agree with most that has already been said in here. The show shows a lot of promise, but it still has a long way to go. First off, I felt that there were too many things in there that didn't really serve any other purpose than making the show last longer. I didn't like the opening movie very much, and others have already pointed out the singing zombies. In fact, I didn't find any of the skits particularly funny, so that is definitely something you should work on for the next episode.

The reviews were alright even if you were way too harsh with The Pool and way too kind with God, heh, but even here there is room for improvement. Perhaps you could show us a few scenes from the movies you're reviewing while talking? Having the camera stuck in one angle for 600 frames or so is not all that interesting, considering that the voice acting wasn't the most enthusiastic I've heard. Speaking of angles, I also think you could vary them a bit more. Most of them had the camera pointing downwards, if I recall correctly. Oh, and a show like this needs an audience!

This may sound overly negative, so I'll finish by mentioning the things you did well. The sets looked absolutely gorgeous! Lots of neat little details here, like on his desk. It'd be cool, for later episodes, if you incorporated some of these into the show. Like, whenever you show a clip from a movie, you could open the file cabinet, the host could receive a phone call during the show, making a (hopefully) entertaining skit, and so on. I'm just thinking out loud here. I also liked the interviews. The one with Sandford anyway. The use of the backstage scenery from Imaginopolis was pretty clever as well, probably my favorite bit.

So yeah, spend a little more time polishing and work on your skits, and I'm sure the next episode will be great.

Tuna Hematoma 04-06-2008 11:04 AM

You have all the right pieces to make this type of show, but the pieces you used were very high on the cringingly bad scale. The interviews weren't very interesting, the volume for both Sandford and Arnoy were both off from yours... Interviews are usually hard to make interesting, unless you add something to them... like a slight gag, or clips from there thing... I ran into the same problem with Late Night. These shows need clips for upcoming movies, cuz as it is right now, is you talking to sandford and arnoy about their futures in 3dmm and your opinion on some movies.

All this is easily fixable and your next episode should be a lot better. There is a lot of room for improvement.

Aaron Haynes 04-06-2008 11:10 PM

I think it's fair to say you completely overextended yourself on this one. It's a lot more like 3DMM Evil than 3DMMers United, and has some of the more irritating aspects of that, like a tendency to drone on long past our patience for it. You and Klaymen's hosting personalities are similar as well, kind of arrogant and unpolished, especially in the reviews, where you started rambling and didn't correct reading mistakes. I got the impression that you were only sort of trying to do this right, and slipped into a "sdlbfsldjfbljds who cares" mentality uncomfortably often.

Basically, you should edit yourself significantly. You don't need skits and commercials. You don't need musical acts. You don't need to show off your old movies. By emphasizing the substance and indeed, the point of doing a magazine in the first place, you can come in, give us content, and get the hell out quick enough that we're interested to see another one.

To this end, you should put more effort into the reviews. You did something I wished the last generation of magazines would do, which is show screenshots of movies while talking about them, but you seem to have missed the point of why that's a good device. You comment at length on a specific shot that sucked in The Pool, but you didn't show it. While you're talking about the beautiful scenery in God, you're literally standing in front a screenshot of the 2D Text title. This kind of stuff should be really obvious. I think you could take this device even farther, having your actor walk through the movies, stopping and starting them, playing lines of dialogue or animations to emphasize a point, all with you standing there, walking around, pointing things out.

I was interested enough to pay close attention throughout the interviews and part of the reviews, and the undead motif was kinda neat, but to be honest, I dunno if you're the best personality to be doing something like this. Your first question to Fred was downright bizarre, your tendency to erupt into weird voices and stupid noises is distracting rather than entertaining, and frankly the less I'm reminded of your...."unique" political opinions, the better. It's hard to know how to tell you to keep yourself out of a project, but there it is -- tone it down, stick to the movies, the people, and the community, and approach it a bit more thoughtfully, and I think you can keep this going for a while at least.

Aaron Haynes 04-06-2008 11:35 PM

BTW, Michael: The point isn't that END was deep. It's not. It's just extremely good at evoking a mood through a combination of visuals and music.

Compcat 04-07-2008 01:27 AM

Thanks everybody for the comments. Going to keep all these points in mind when I start on the next one.
