Pangs of conscience, what should I do?

I couple of days ago, I got 1234 SEK (that's about 191 USD) put on my bank account, from some unknown benefactor (?). Only information I got was some unknown account number. I don't know what to do now! Should I just keep it, without saying anything? I mean, I don't complain. But if I, by mistake, put 1234 SEK on some other's account, I'd be pretty pissed. For some people 1234 SEK is a big loss, and for some it isn't.

So, should I contact my bank and ask them about that account number and then contact the real owner of the money, or should I just keep the money and wait for the bank to contact me? Cause I guess that that unknown person will contact the bank if the money has ended up at the wrong account.

Funny that the amount is 1234. Hope it's 5678 next time.

unknown benefactor? thats pretty weird. they should be able to give you more info.

Bank Error In Your Favor Collect $200 ?

Klown 10-18-2007 09:54 PM

Contact the bank about it and wait for a while. If after like 3 months nothing happens go and spend it. It's probably an error that happens sometimes.

Flounder 10-18-2007 10:10 PM

Honestly, i'd probably keep the money and just give it away. Just give it to my friends. Totally the wrong thing to do, but that's what i'd do.

Phil Williamson 10-18-2007 10:13 PM

Yeah don't do this because the bank will probably take it back soon and then you'd be out 1234 SEK and that would suck.

Tell them/wait for a few months.

Dr Ashworth 10-18-2007 10:46 PM

If a teller did this, a $190 outage could get that person fired. In addition to the person who it belongs to losing their money. Yeah, it's a mistake that it went into your account, but by knowingly keeping it, what separates you from people who steal amounts like this?

Not to sound like a moralist, but as someone who was a teller once, do you realize how many people never report mistakes like this? I'd say 90%.

Demented Ferret 10-19-2007 12:33 AM

Do not keep the money and inform your bank right away. Your bank will take the money back.

Tuna Hematoma 10-19-2007 12:56 AM

Yeah, tell your bank. They'll probably credit your account or do something else that's nice.

Slime 10-19-2007 02:53 AM

Tell them so that they dont take it back when you aren't expecting it (I actually have no idea if the bank could do that. I'd probably just keep it and wait a few months before really considering it to be mine.)

Breed 10-19-2007 03:03 AM

a friend once got 50 thousand dollars put onto his bank account. He decided to keep it. Spent it like crazy. Turns out his parents put it on there for some god knows what reason, and they were pretty pissed when they found out that he spent it, I dunno really the whole story but that's what I saw on my end

anyway do the right thing and tell your bank

My advice would be to wait it out for a few months maybe and if it's still there start spending. You could claim that it was the first time you'd checked your balance in months and that you assumed you'd just saved it up from working (if you work).

Jesterfoot 10-19-2007 04:28 AM

Don't touch it, don't tell anyone.

I found a leather briefcase/laptop bag at a bus stop once, with a laptop in it and a bunch of papers and a cellphone.

I took it to the bus HQ and some guy had already rang them looking for it. I made him happy.

I hope everybody would do this.

A few weeks before, I left my "hand bag" (a man's hand bag, don't know what it's called in english) behind in a bus, which contained my passport, identity card, glasses, an mp3 player, around $150 in restaurant tickets (from work), some migraine medicine, keys and pocket knife.

I went every day to the bus HQ but nobody turned it in. Fuckers.

I spent the next two months doing paperwork to get a new passport and identity card. Some people are assholes. They could have at least kept the mp3 player and $150 and handed in bag so I could get my glasses, medicine and papers. Some people have no conscience.

With some banks if there's missing money they'll just take it out of the teller's paycheck. Sucks for them but what the hell. I'm not sure what I'd do.. I'd probably only keep it if it were under $20

I know a guy who used to manipulate paypal someway so he'd have a negative balance in his account (he was generating currency). It's the best crime because you get stuff for free while the seller still gets paid. But then that guy stole my ipod so I was pretty disillusioned after that.

PS. I have a feeling that since it's not a nice rounded number, it's likely to be someone's paycheck. Someone who busted ass for minimum wage.

Dr Ashworth 10-19-2007 08:17 AM

I've worked at a few banks, and things like this are pretty common and fixed that night when the drawers/vault are balanced. Usually, the member is contacted before it's fixed, but if they don't answer the phone, they're just going to take it anyway. I remember when someone had SPENT that money like you guys are saying. Know what we did? We just took it out anyway. Put them in the negatives.

Shaun 10-19-2007 08:19 AM

did you slap an overdraw fee on top of it you cocks? I bet you did

Dr Ashworth 10-19-2007 08:20 AM

Nope, that would be cruel and I would feel a pang of conscience.

Haha, now WALLETS are different. (don't know why) I've found a $20 on the ground a few times, actually, and of course kept it. But bank accounts I would report. I don't know, it just feels more "OFFICIAL" I guess.

a purse

it's called A PURSE.

James Burgon 10-19-2007 06:23 PM

I once dropped my wallet at waterloo on a drunk night out. I phoned up after and turns out my wallet was returned, minus the money and my bankcard. At least I got my drivers license back.

But yeah i wouldn't take it cause banks are cunts and WILL take it back, even if it puts you in overdraft.

Kevitus 10-19-2007 06:37 PM

If it's an error, it's not your fault. In other words: Keep it.

Rabid Dinosaur 10-19-2007 07:43 PM

I don't even know why I would return a wallet if I took the money out of it.

Gray Fox 10-19-2007 08:08 PM

They take the money as a reward for turning in your wallet to the lost and found.

Phil Williamson 10-19-2007 08:15 PM

the person who takes the money isn't necessarily also the person who turns it in

James Burgon 10-19-2007 09:17 PM

It's like this one story where professional robbers completely emptied this womans house, then posted her passport/important documents to her 2 weeks later.

I guess people will return the cards at least. It's pretty easy to pretend like you found it with "no money in it".

Scouser talking.

Slime 10-19-2007 10:43 PM

Yeah, what the fuck, Rabid you're an idiot. Anyone would be happy to just get their wallet back rather than not getting it at all. Its the cards that you don't want to have to reapply for individually. Maybe you don't have cards, but most people do.

because it has the person's IDs on it which are pretty much useless to you, but useful to them.

Rabid Dinosaur 10-20-2007 12:21 AM

Of course, but it would still feel really backhanded.

And this is true. I bet the people at the lost and found take the money that hasn't already been stolen. Can't trust anyone :(. My view of the human race is obviously still too romantic.
