The Sniper @ Ben Rice's HQ

To be honest, this was pretty much just a practice movie. Luckily, this has built my confidence in animating Mario, which I sorely needed. Pretty much all of the MS2 animations of Mario so far are either close-up shots or sprites of Mario. I'm a little less scared of making him move around 'n' stuff. Hooray.

NOTE: There actually isn't any sniping in this movie. D:

(Mirrors would be nice)

Umm, yeah. The board was kind of fucking up for some reason when I posted this, so if someone could delete the other two duplicate threads that'd be super.

hahaaha this was fun. Good work sir.

A lot of fancy eye candy as can be expected from you, of course, I especially liked the animation of the gunshots, and basically everything when Ben got killed. Hahaha his brain made me laugh.

And seeing Mario and Toad all hitmanesque like that was really fun.

It's kinda becoming obvious that sooner or later I'm gonna have to get a new PC. It struggled notably during Vaschoom's transformation, and the City A Splode shot

Pretty sweet though. A good cheap laugh, which I guess is all a Sniper movie can really be:)

Haha, I might have just gone a little overboard with those scenes.

Denny Betterman 03-17-2006 02:47 AM

haha, very nicely done sir! My, that first music wasn't from/inspired by Lyle, now, was it?

Ben Rice 03-17-2006 05:04 PM

Edit: Nevermind.

Knife.

Slade 03-17-2006 06:41 PM

Hahaha, that was awesome. Very well made.

Yup

Brossy 03-17-2006 09:09 PM

That was pretty friggin awesome!

Aaron Haynes 03-17-2006 09:35 PM

Nicely done. However, a few points of critcism (and I don't know if this stems from it just being a short sniper movie or not)

Your establishing shots are too long. A big part of it is the music and the action setting, but the 40-frame pans of Mario in the window and Ben on the street should cut much earlier. This carries over to some of your animation as well. Ben sliding on the sidewalk, Mario and Toad getting into the car, the car driving off, the movie has a tendency to feel sluggish, like it was made for a higher framerate than 3DMM's. The shot of Vaschoom chasing the car seems to imply three different speeds; one for the road, one for the car, and one for him. It's very weird looking as a result.

Mario.....hmm. On one level you did a better job than I was expecting. But a lot of times he looks really bizarre and moves in odd ways. He's too tall, his arms are too long, he just seems really lanky and often doesn't fit together well. Scene 4 with the punch does a weird thing with his arm, the impact isn't quite right. The turn is well-done, though a minor point: check out his torso on 37-38. It stops turning completely while the arm keeps going. If you did one or two more turning frames for the torso the fluidity would be perfect. The punch combo is good.

On scene 5 he looks a little creepy. The lean/step forward should really start with his torso a little further leaned back. The energy blast thing was really nicely done though.

He looks perfect on scene 8.

You may want to edit the hand models you use for him (scene 12). Something a little bulkier and less distinct. His arm seems too long here as well.

He looks perfect on scene 16. The legs may be a little too long, though. I'd suggest less of a spike for them, but something in between that and a cylinder.

The last scene made me laugh, but here he looks REALLY weird. The arms seperate from the torso and the cartoony depth effect for the peace sign is overdone. It looks more like a way-too-big arm than what you were probably going for.

Overall, I think you've figured out the mechanics and you do seem to have gained a lot of confidence in animating him, but the 3DMM objects you use for his arms and legs need tweaking and rescaling. He shouldn't be fat, but he should be shorter with limbs closer to his body. Something about two spheres for each arm doesn't feel right either, but it's hard to know how to fix that. There's a little sloppiness in the animating here that's probably more down to this being a quick short movie than anything else.

Oh, and Toad is PERFECTLY done. He just need to be able to blink more.

Ben Rice 03-17-2006 09:55 PM

Toad has no hands in the last scene. :( And with scene 21, I think Toads arm and the gun should have jolted up since he is after all, firing a gun.

I'll be sure to spend more than two days on the animation for MS2. But yeah, I think I've gotten the hang of it now and I'll keep you guys' comments in mind. I was actually thinking about doing a Fingdings 2 for Mario's gloves. Though, I'd have to do a little studying about the anatomy of the hand first. We'll see how it goes.

Dominator Dan 03-20-2006 07:01 PM

YOU GOT MY COSTUME RIGHT

vaschoom was awesome hahaha NICE ONE

Anders Borg 03-24-2006 11:39 AM

MAKE FINGDINGS 2! Awesome movie btw.

Getysburg 03-25-2006 06:04 PM

That was good. 7/10

LOL at Ben's corpse scene.

Gorosaurus 03-28-2006 05:31 AM

That was pretty good, but no, I didn't follow it real well. Some pretty effects here and there, and it was a nice animation test, but not one of the better sniper movies I've seen. BTW, if there's no sniper, it should be assassin. Though I don't know if that ever caught on..

Most of my cricisms would be much like Aaron's, though I haven't gone through and dissected each movement to try and figure out how and why the characters moved in various ways.

And one thing to keep in mind is that a tough guy Toad is only cool if done relatively. Have some regular ones to offset him, or better yet just have him snap occasionally and gain that furrow above his eyes.

I'd like to see a much more solid anatomy from you, as I know you are capable of that and have done so in the past. The movements worked, but they weren't what I think you would be happy with. And I'd say that a lot of that stems from not having set proportions. The more you use Mario the more you'll understand all that more intimately, but I'm sure you already know that. It can only get better from here!

Klaymen 03-28-2006 11:32 AM

Interesting.

Doomdragon 10-29-2006 01:32 PM

Dam that was cool

Black Raptor 01-20-2007 04:10 AM

what are you guys talking about. that was STUPID!!!!!Mario's fricken body and head was v3dmm. same for toad.I mean if actually made his body out of spheres and stuff I would have given this a much better rating . AND WHY THE HECK DID HE TURN INTO A TOTEM POLE!!!!!

1.5/5

Demented Ferret 01-20-2007 04:53 AM

Hey, Black Raptor - just remember not everyone has the time to construct stuff out of spheres alone any more. v3dmm is there to help people do things quickly.

Tuna Hematoma 01-20-2007 04:55 AM

is there a v3dmm for women? HHGHEYYY OOOHHHHHHHH
