It's supposed to emphasize that there's a form of mortal conflict occurring in the movie.

My impression was that they're solely emphasizing the social concern of "survival", rather than "balancing the budget" or "stricter pancake laws".

that'll only come to tragedy in the end. Pancake laws are what made this nation !

It'd be better if the second planet was fliped both vertically and horizontally that what you could make a historical connection to mankinds belief in Antipodes and that'd add cool depth, but yeah was good.

Yeah, the second planet has been redesigned in the main film to be more distinguishable from the other.
