Vlarion 1 - The Elemental War

Finally, at long last, after much delay, through much anticipation, at the end of the road, at the 11th hour, in the final stages, on the brink of completion, I ran out of adjectives and released this movie.

This is the product of just over a years' worth of work. What started as a fairly non-work-intensive plan to add a new polish to an old series in preparation for the completion of Alternate Vlarion 4 has exploded into a full-blown feature-length film. Instead of basically doing the Squaresoft thing and adding a few minutes of cool stuff to the beginning and end of an ancient work, I scrapped the original file entirely and started again from scratch. Why? I guess because I'm insane and probably have some creative OCD thing going on.

A pretty ridiculous amount of detail has been put into every aspect of this project; character designs, environments, direction, artwork, pacing, characterization, sound design, the works. I've learned a hell of a lot about Maya, Photoshop, preproduction, sound editing, and moviemaking in general while working on this project, so the process of making this film has been gradual and labored.

In completing it, I have a lot more confidence about how to not only use v3dmm well enough to complete the series at a much faster pace, but how to plan and build a multimedia project that I care about, how to manage ideas that I've wanted to bring to full fruition since I was fifteen. Creating something that lives up to what I've thought about and obsessed over from a storytelling standpoint for as long as I have has been incredibly instructive for future multimedia endeavors.

This project is, in a way, six years in the making. It's the product of a naive kid obsessed with RPGs and storybuilding channeled through a 21-year-old developing and trying to find his own voice in storytelling, direction, and artistic design. I hope you enjoy.

Not the ideal way to see the movie; occasional frameskips, mild compression, and slightly-off-sound-syncing at a couple spots, but if you don't have v3dmm, or can't get it working, or your computer's not fast enough to watch this, or whatever, here's the streamable AVI. This link may go down as bandwidth requires. Requires Flash 8!
