Rating System

I have just finished coding our own rating system for the custom 3dmm sections. You can now rate movies on a scale of 0 - 100.

To rate a movie, just click on the "rate" button in the threaded view of the movie. It is right next to the "quote" and "quick reply" buttons.

You can change your rating at any time, by simply rating the movie again (your old rating will get overwriten and the total score will be recalculated).

You can also see who else rated the movie and with what score by clicking on the total score listed on the movie line in the movies display table! No privacy here.

Please let me know what you think.

I think I'm the first rater. I'm cool.

Demented Ferret 12-24-2005 01:52 AM

Haha, that's really excellent. I've just trawled through our list so far and I've rated what I can and everything seems to work great.

Not problem at all - though the rating sytem colours could do with being a bit 'chalkier', the bold colours seem to clash with the whole sublety of other colours in the design.

Good suggestion...I've gone ahead and changed them.

You also need a rule to state that stupidity like voting a movie '1%' just because you hate the person is generally dicouraged and excessive stupid-voting will result in said people not able to add ratings. I've just seen Ben Rice's latest movie being given 1%; when clearly it is at least 5 or 6% (Just kidding, it's not a 1% movie though).

Edit: Nice work!

If it becomes a problem, I'll add some more functionality that will allow mods to remove ratings.

Demented Ferret 12-24-2005 02:13 AM

That seems like a good idea.

Digital Taco 12-24-2005 03:07 AM

Nice. I like it. Showing the score somewhere in the movie's thread (or in the forum itself) would be nice though.

I'm glad to see you're trying all these NEW COOL IDEAS nowadays, Goat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

What happened to that shiny rating system you made me write you?

Digital Taco 12-24-2005 04:38 AM

how is the weighting going to be done? maybe a person's vote's weight could go up if they add a review for the movie?

Lyntan 12-24-2005 06:39 AM

That's so cheap, like bribing somebody to use your product with glamorous advertising. Cheap, I tell you, and you'll see it on this bulletin board over my dead, stinkin' body!

Slime 12-24-2005 06:45 AM

Nah, its not cheap, it makes sense cause like... anyone can just run around giving all the movies 1% and 100%. People who give reviews are more likely to REALLY CONSIDER the % they give. They SHOULD get more weight than random votes.

I was unsatisfied with how difficult it was to be precise with the image map...you would typically have to click on it about 3 or 4 times to get the exact score you were looking for. Consquently, because it was a dynamic image, it was reloaded each time. I couldn't get the bar graphic down to a decent file size, and was worried about bandwidth.

That's exactly what I'm planning on doing. The reviews section should be done very soon (maybe today). I am going to make it so scores given in reviews count 3 times that of a normal rating (assuming the movie being reviewed is in our database at the time the review is submitted).

People who review a lot of movies may also get a x2 weighting for non-review ratings simply for being an "honorable" critic.

Still, I need to come up with a solution for these assholes giving 1% scores to people they don't like. That's not quite fair.

*gives goat's movies 1%*
*doesn't use action tag*
